In Chapter 4 of LOTF, we experience a shift in mood. In Chapters 1-3 we have of feeling of freedom, but underneath it all, a simmering feeling of tenseness and conflict. Jack is slowly giving in to his lust for killing. In Chapter 4, Jack snaps. He manages to gather the choir and kill a large pig. However, this did not come without a price. Jack and the choir let the fire go out. Meanwhile, a ship passed by the island. The fire was not producing smoke and the ship kept going. The boys had a chance of being rescued and Jack threw it away. The mood shifted from one of joyfulness and freedom to one of anguish and lost hope.
